Adelina's Whales – Story Summary

Adelina is a ten-year-old girl who lives in the small fishing village of La Laguna in Baja California, Mexico. Every winter, gray whales travel thousands of miles from Alaska and Russia to the warm waters of Laguna San Ignacio. Adelina loves watching the whales and learning about them from her father and grandfather. Her grandfather tells stories about the first friendly whale that approached his fishing boat many years ago. Visitors from around the world come to see the whales because they are known for being gentle and curious around people. Adelina learns many facts about whales and dreams about helping and studying them when she grows up. When spring arrives, the whales leave for their journey north, but Adelina always remembers her special friends and looks forward to their return each year. The story shows the special friendship between Adelina, her community, and the gray whales that visit their lagoon every year.
